I rarely watched old films since I came to university. A few days ago, I heard the song ‘Up Where We Belong’ on Youtube as it came up as a recommended video. Then, I decided to watch ‘An Officer and A Gentleman’ as it was recommended by my mum for ages. Indeed, I think it’s a very good film.

First, in terms of actor/ actress, it was already amazing. Richard Gere, is like George Clooney, as he is what many guys would want to be when they get older. Although his acting is not that great (I would describe his acting as a piece of wood0, he looks great enough for the film. Debra Winger, as the main actress, is what I would describe as proper fit (Of course back at that time). She looked pretty and sweet. She definitely attracted me to the film even more!

Soundtrack-wise, ‘Up where we belong’ (or ‘Love Lifts us Up Where We Belong’) fits  into the theme of the film so well. Why? Because it’s about how the love relation of Richard Gere and Debre Winger kept Richard going with the U.S. Navy training camp. Well, sometimes when you do things for someone rather than yourself, you might do it better as you don’t wanna disappoint the other party.

I kinda like this film. I found it both realistic, and idealistic. It tells the truth that, some women at that time only wanted to marry navy pilot for the sake of the title. They would even set a trap (get themselves pregnant with the pilot) so the pilot have to marry them. It might happen in this modern world somehow, as in women seducing rich people for the sake of the wealth. They might set the same ‘trap’ too. Why is it idealistic? Debra Winger in the film is the idealistic character. From the first half of the film, we can see she loves Richard Gere so much, that it is nothing much related whether he is a navy pilot. She supports him through the tough time, and finally till Richard succeeds. Is this unrealistic? I don’t know, finding a girl who would support you through the tough time like she did, seems to be difficult in nowadays world, as there are too many choices for them that they don’t really have to stick to you. Well, this film got me, made me wanna go back and live in an earlier time. Well, if I were born earlier, it would mean, easier immigration, more romantic, and probably better, and simpler life, where freedom and warmth are everywhere.

‘Love Lifts Us Up Where We Belong’, yea, that’s how people get good.

Having studied English literature for two and a half semesters, I genuinely think that the creative pick-up lines nowadays can really be categorized as ‘literature’.

Literature comes from human life, just as Wordsworth claimed, poetry should come from rural life. John Keats had a humble life, and became a great writer. What does it tell us? Literature originates from human life, as writers get inspired from what they see in human life.

Pick up lines, or chat up lines, are as Wordsworth mentioned, human language, as they are actually uttered by normal people. One of my favourite writer, John Keats, also included a pick-up-line-like line in his letter to Fanny Browne, saying ‘I almost wish we were butterflies and liv’d but three summer days – three such days with you I could fill with more delight than fifty common years could ever contain.’ He, as a Romantic writer, is, in my opinion, the beginner of the pink-up culture, a good, healthy, and sensible culture. I would imagine that, Wordsworth, who also agreed that literature comes from normal life, would love the pick-up-line culture, and expand the lines into rhymes, rhymes into poems, poems to a poetry collection. Yes, pick-up poems, pick-up books, pick-up passages that would help you through the ice-breaking process, and kill the dead air.

Do not underestimate the structure and techniques in pick-up lines, as far as I know, a successful pick up line is usually a highly metaphorical one, hopefully rhyme a bit. For example, ‘If you can build any kind of ship in the world, what would you build? I would build a relationship!’ This one is quite a metaphorical one, it may take the hearer a few seconds to realize what happened, its construction is detailed too, putting the ‘ship’ into the word ‘relation’ to make it work, clever. If you have read the poetry of Keats’, you would also find his work is as this line, highly metaphorical. So how can you not call good pick-up lines literature? The line ‘I have got XX kg of muscle of steel, and sex appeal.’ shows that pick up lines can rhyme. No matter how Wordsworth put forward the idea for blank verse, lines that rhyme are always better and more memorable.

Pick up lines are usually successful in making the hearer laugh, and it is usually the first step in building the possible ship, what ship? Relationship. But if you are going for one, don’t quote from Shakespeare for a pick-up line, because it is highly risky. Remember a quote from A Mid Summer Night’s Dream? ‘Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind, And therefore is winged Cupid painted blind.‘ It can be seen as offensive. And for Much Ado About Nothing, ‘For which of my bad parts didst thou fall in love with me?’ Do not try it either, you might get a reply with the title of the play, ‘Just that one, but then I knew it was Much Ado About Nothing.’

Pick-up lines are generally inspired by creativity and the texts you read, the more you read, the more things you can make reference to. For instance, if you do not know anything about the Science, you can never come across the line ‘Hi, I need to accuse you of causing Global Warming because you are too hot.’ Wordsworh’s companion Coleridge is correct, poetry, or perhaps literature, is as logical as Science, but just deeper as it includes Science. There should be a course in English Literature degree called ‘Pick-up course’, because it is an integral part of ANY LITERATURE in the world, and is potentially a new favourite genre of literature. Yes, I am sure if a person can create a pick-up poetry, pick-up story, pick-up biography, or maybe a pick-up novel, he can probably be crowned as the next Keats!

The Brazil World Cup has almost been done. It will be the semi-final next week. Here is what I would predict

1st Semi-Final: Brazil vs Germany
Brazil has got their main man Neymar going out, so I would think that Germany is more likely to win the match. Germany has remained stable performance throughout the world cup, they did not do exceptionally well, but that is what they are usually like: being stable and going to semi-final every time. Brazil, on the other hand, can somehow give surprise. My personal feeling about Brazil is that, they are good, but somehow they are not good enough in defence, while Germany is a more balanced team. So I would think Germany could win this and proceed to the final.

2nd Semi-Final: Argentina vs Netherlands
This match is more 50/50 in my opinion. It would more than likely be a match between Robben and Messi, as the main men in the two teams. I would think Argentina would have a higher chance to win though, as Netherlands would probably only have Robben’s one-man-show, and it shouldn’t really work on Argentina. However, if Argentina cannot knock Netherlands out in 120 minutes, it would be Netherlands when it comes to penalty kick as we have all seen the magical keeper Krul’s wonderful saves in the penalty kick against Costa Rica.

Therefore, I would predict the World Cup Final to be Germany vs Argentina. If it is the case, I would have another preview for the final.

P.S. looking forward to my birthday party! 😀 And the nightout too! I still remember the nightout in NOX last Saturday because it was just too awesome! 🙂

In football, there is no one better than C. Ronaldo recently.
In ability, he is definitely the best one, with wonderful control, speed, and powerful shots. No matter what the tactic of the team is, he can still cope with anything, thus contributing a lot to the team. Usually, in his teams, his teammates only need to do a task –> give the ball the C. Ronaldo, then he will do everything else!

Outside the football pitch, he is still decent. Not only dos he not have criminal record, he also donates money to schools, goes to the hospital to visit some patients, and does voluntary work sometimes. He is definitely a hero, a legend, the human beyond human level!

His IQ is definitely higher than Einstein, he is definitely more logical than Holmes, and he looks better than Tom Cruise! Being able to witness his magical skills on the field, we should feel glad of being born in this century. His life would be more than enough to be written into a fiction: on how he uses football to control the world, how his good deeds can help maintain the peaceful world, and how every word he says is golden. He’s just a legend!

The World Cup comes, I believe it’s the time for most people to bet on football matches. But in order to get rich, I wouldn’t bet, I’d just need a phone with texting function to get rich. How do I do it?

Before the first match, I’d send texts to 300,000 people, telling 1/3 of them that the home team would win, 1/3 of them that it wouldd be a draw, and 1/3 of them that the away team would win.1/3 of them must win some money in this way because of my tips.

Before the second match, I’d send 33,333 text messages to those who won money from the first match, saying the home team would win, 33,333 saying it would be a draw, and 33,333 saying the away team would win.

By the time of the third match, approximately 11,111 people would have received the 100%-winning tips. Then, all I would need to do is to send all of them a text saying ‘If you want to carry on with your 100%winning record, send me £100, and I’ll tell you’. I assume not everyone would send me the money, so take it half, then I’d have earned approximately £500,000. But then, among those 11,111 people, 1/3 of them would win again (with repeated procedures as before), so approximately 37,00 people can keep up their 100% winning record. Among those, they must want to know about the results of the coming matches. At that time, you send them a text again, saying ‘if you wanna know the results, send me £200’. Then, I’d probably earn around £370,000 in this round. Keep on repeating this routine, and I’ll be able to live in Rubislaw Den South area soon!

Difference of playing and coaching

I didn’t really know the difference between playing and coaching before, but now I do know after coaching some real beginners.

First, they require different qualities. Coaches need to be patient, observative, and can always encourage players. They don’t have to be very good players, although it should be better if they are. They don’t need to have a heart to compete, it may be better if they don’t because it can make them calm and be good at observing players in matches. Competitive players, on the other hand, need to be equipped with good skills (not if they just started), and the heart to compete and improve.

Competitive players should definitely have a very strong will to improve, because after a certain age, their improvement will be limited. Once they find that they can hardly improve, they can always do more coaching. Therefore, I believe players should focus on maximizing their improvement while they can. The high-peak of improvement may not be related to age, but the amount of time they have played.

I regret that I didn’t start to play table-tennis when I was young. I only started last year to be honest. I am glad that we won the Aberdeen Local League this year. During the summer, I actually planned to maximize my improvement, but I got allocated to coach the beginners, which wouldn’t help much. I don’t mean that I don’t like coaching, but I do have a strong will to play better in the next season, and i believe the summer is a better time for improvement. I only started last year, I think I do have potential to do a lot better (as good as I possibly can be).

Well, what I would do in summer for table-tennis is…
1) Practise more with those who have a strong will to improve
2) Will keep on coaching, but may sneak to the ‘middle group’ (not beginners) at some point
3) Will visit Drumchapel Table-Tennis at some point to actually see how they do so well in making good players, and may join some trainings there
4) do more physical exercise which would help.
I hope all those would work! Anyway, I am happy that we won the Aberdeen Local League and League Cup! It is the first medal I have got ever!
