Lottery-> Who doesn’t know it is almost impossible to win big money from it?
£1 to buy a chance of being a millionaire, it is not a lot, but it is wiser to save it for food and things, which we basically need.

LOL! The aim of lottery is not for people to practically get rich. It is not an activity for people to burn their money; not a ticket for people to revive (to live another life), a chance for people to fantasise about winning the lottery before the results come out.

What would you do ‘when’ you won the million dollars/ pounds?
Study/ work-free life, partying everyday, living in a castle, travelling around the world (or maybe the space as well), hiring celebrities to appear in your party, and probably never calculating the maximum amount of money you can use in a day……..

Nowadays people fight loads of obstacles just to get a job; working like a bull just to earn enough to make a living. Now you can use a quid, to buy a dream, or fantasy, what a fair deal!

So we should not be pissed that we don’t win. We should be thankful to the National Lottery for allowing us to spend a quid on a never-ending dream. Winning, is just a bonus.

Listen Children to a story that did happen long ago
In a kingdom within city and the uni-lad below

So I knew her in my second year of uni. After knowing her, I immediately applied to join her ‘army’ team, being the soldier around her. I went so far to an extent that, I went to McDonald’s to work because I knew she worked there. Despite the fact that we worked different shifts (She usually finished at 8am, while I started at 9am), I would literally go to work a couple hours early, just to see her. My manager sometimes said ‘Well, you do not get paid for starting early.’ I would just say ‘Well, I do not really care.’

She studied at university as well, and we were in the same course, and the same tutorial. Sometimes we studied till late, and she would come to my place for food before she went home. My fridge ended up being empty all the time but I wouldn’t really care.

This went on till almost Christmas time. One day, she said to me ‘Ahh I am spending my Christmas alone again this year…’ Maybe I thought about it too much, but I genuinely took it as an implication. Also, I thought ‘Well, it is time for me to resign from the army, and see if I can get further with her.’ So, i asked her to go to the beach on the silent night, and she said ‘Yes.’

At the beach, we lied down and were staring at the stars. At some point, I asked ‘Do you want to be my girlfriend?’, just that, just straight. She smiled, with ‘ha ha’, without saying anything. Well, what does it mean then? But I thought, if I asked further, it might ruined it. So I was like 50-50 about it, not sure about what she thought.

Then, on the 25th, we hanged out then went for a dinner at hers. I asked her again the same question. Her reply was the same, and somehow we just ate and finished the dinner cheerily. I didn’t ask further, I thought she wasn’t sure about it. THEN what?

She went home on the 31st December and said she would spend the new year with her family. Fair enough! But then what? On the new year day, she posted a picture of her and a guy holding hands, with loads of hearts in it. Well, fair enough, I asked her why she did not reject me right away? She said ‘If I rejected you, then you probably would not spend those time with me then.’ Oh… lol…. Well done, playaaa!

Well, once a soldier, always a soldier, she has always been a player and everytime she breaks up, I help her through, while HOPING (realising I cannot) I have a chance. I know I don’t but well, it’s hard anyway. So, once you’ve joined the Goddess’ Army, it’s hard for you to get out.

So what’s next year? I might have more hope on MU winning the Premier League than myself finding a partner.

What’s your view then?

Being taken over by The Fear

Lily Allen’s The Fear can probably be crowned The National Anthem of the 21st Century.

‘I want to be rich and I want lots of money
I don’t care about clever I don’t care about funny
I want loads of clothes and fuckloads of diamonds
I heard people die while they are trying to find them’

These opening lines cannot be more real. People nowadays don’t give a crap about anything other than money. It’s easy to say we shouldn’t be too materialistic, but it’s hard to put this principle into life. At the end of the day, money means power, and it gives you a very comfortable life. It’s difficult, if not impossible, not to be engulfed by the greed inside us. Again, at the end of the day, ‘I’m not a saint but I’m not a sinner’.

‘And I’ll take my clothes off and it will be shameless
‘Cause everyone knows that’s how you get famous.’

This is exactly the view of the majority people I believe. We don’t seem to care how we get money, we don’t care about whether it’s ethic to do something in exchange of fame, glory, and eventually money. Is it the correct mindset? I don’t know. Living in a corrupted world, I don’t know what is real, and what I meant to feel anymore.

And here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25QrnxD-NB4 you get to hear the great national anthem of the 21 century.

I do admire Lily Allen’s ability to write lyrics in a very very poetic form (at least to me it is so poetic). But the most important thing, is I think she does write people’s heart. I personally think, she did write a lot that reflects my life. The Fear is one of them, The Littlest Things… ehm… I may probably have encountered something similar.

Well, listening to Lily Allen’s at least gives me some comfort, so I know there are people outside who could still see the truth.

‘Sometimes I find myself sittin’ back and reminiscing,
especially when I have to watch other people kissin
Sometimes I wish we could just pretend
Even if only for one weekend
So come on, Tell me
Is this the end?
I was so lost back then
But with a little help from my friends
I found the light in the tunnel at the end’

Dreams for Immortality

With nowadays fast-paced technology, human is probably quite closed to reach immortality. Scientists have already done a lot to help human reach immortality, and they expect within the next 30 years, they will have accomplished their goal.

From an extremely long time ago, immortality has already been one of the biggest dreams of human, and it seems pretty awesome as well. We can also see immortality as a part of the evolution process of human: we grow to our best form, and the process of aging slows down (or even stops) so we can be at our top form for a long time, and it qualifies ‘the fittest survives’ theory. With eternal life, it’s likely that we are guaranteed the best life as we get to do everything we want.

Although it’s good for an individual, when all people on Earth reached immortality, it could be problematic. Overcrowding has already been a problem on Earth at the moment. Some people will probably have to evolve with fins and gills as they will have to live in the water before human can migrate to another planet (Maybe they’d even need to apply for visas for other planet?) In terms of work, with immortality, the retirement age will probably have to rise to thousands years old. Well, it may be fine if you have a relaxing job; but some might have to flip burgers in McDonald’s literally for centuries. With the 50% of global wealth belonging to 1% of people, the rich will still get richer, and the poor poorer. The whole society will also be unsafe, because even 30-year sentence will not be useful against criminals anymore, and they will literally do anything they want!

Well, immortality is probably a good thing to develop, but I think it’s nothing much better than having a meaningful and successful life. It’s probably better to have someone admiring your work, than living a life without anyone noticing. In this world, wealth is like the symbol of the value of a person. Not saying money is everything, but without money we cannot have anything. And in nowadays world, there are only three proper ways to get rich: 1) Inherit money from a posh family (Not for me) 2) Investment (in a sensible way) 3) Start a business/ work at the manager level at least. Options 2 and 3 are still applicable to me, so, apart from having to do well at university and designing my future path, I’d start learning about investment. You never know, maybe this crazy little blogger here can become the next Buffett!

A Little Sight

Yesterday, as I walked along the street back to my flat, I saw a mother and a daughter (around 6 years old I guess) running to catch a bus. They were running fast, and were trying their best, and with smiles on their faces. I would describe it as quite an interesting and ‘adorable’ scene. It reminds me of the times where I caught the public transports with my parents when I was younger.

We used to live on an island, and ferry was the main transport for us to go somewhere else. As I remember, everytime we went to the ferry, we were rushing, as we were almost always quite late for many different reasons: it took me too much time to finish my meal; mum forgot to do her make-up; dad needed to go to the toilet before going…… ANY REASONS you can possibly think of. Sometimes of course, we would be late for the ferry; while most of the time we could make it. Yea, everytime we made it we would be so happy, it was like an achievement. And, yea, that is my childhood memory.

Different people have different ways of living, so they all have their own stories. Take ‘catching the bus’ as an example, if you are so posh, that you never even have a chance to get into a public transport in your life, you would miss the fun of catching a bus. If you are so posh or your family is so strict, that you never go into a McDonald’s in your life (don’t be surprised, I have seen those people!), you probably missed out a lot as a child, because McDonald’s is like a MagicLand for kids, it is like the kids’ ‘bar’ or ‘club’, where you can have food or drinks that are tasty, but also unhealthy for you. As a kid, everytime when my parents took me to McDonald’s, I was always happy, especially when I got to have the deep-fried food, that my parents wouldn’t allow me to have a lot, but still gave me the chance to get once a week.

Everyone has different background; different background brings different stories; different stories give different colours to life; different lives, leads to different people. That’s true, but however you are, you can always do what you want, and shouldn’t be restricted too much by the social norms. Just like Warren Buffett, who is extremely rich. The 84-year-old World’s Top Investor, despite being so rich, has simple taste of food, just like a normal child, as he still drinks coca cola, and goes to McDonald’s on a regular basis. What I’m trying to point out is, don’t be bounded by your past so much, just do something that can really make you happy, and it can be something simple! 🙂

I have a dream

To a pal of mine who kept saying to me ‘At the end, you will go back to Hong Kong to live and work, as you will never get a good job here in Europe even if you can stay here. Then you will definitely have to, willing or not, go back.’ I just want to tell this ‘pal’ of mine (who came to Aberdeen with me from Hong Kong), that I am sorry for his pessimistic view of the world. Living in Europe has been my dream for long. I know a fact that, staying in UK to work and to get a citizenship is never easy and I HAVE ALREADY KNOWN THAT, I do NOT need him to keep mentioning it to me that I got almost NO chance. I know this, so I started learning Swedish, because I found that it will be way easier to get a citizenship through Sweden. I will probably keep up my French again soon, because I could also do it through Belgium. Why do I do all that? Because I have a dream, that I would like to fulfil. To that friend of mine, I just want to tell you that, although in your eyes, every place is the same and it is just money that matters, I wholly, truthfully, sincerely, disagree with you. Yes, money matters. Money equals time, time can heal all wounds, so money may be able to cure all wounds. But, have you every thought about dreams, and happiness? A very rich person, can be so poor, that all his got is money. I am not saying that I don’t care about earning money, what I mean is, fulfilling my dreams would give me a sense of achievement, which ultimately gives me a life that I want.

Dreams are very crucial in one’s life, because without dreams, life is miserable. One can be both realistic and have dreams right? If you are an extreme realist who have no dreams, you can probably go ‘fund’ (as a substitute of a rude word) yourself on the day that you were born, as you know everyone is gonna die at the end and nothing last. I probably shouldn’t play table-tennis then because I’ll never be better than some people.

Practically, since the UK Border tends to hate International Students (as they even tried to limited their chance to work here right after graduating), my immigration plan has been changed and is no longer only limited to UK (sensible change as I like Sweden too, was just illuded since I came here long enough). After doing my Undergraduate degree, I’ll do a post-graduate degree here, and I aim at ‘International Law’ or ‘Real Estate’ to increase my competitiveness. To be fair, I thought I would like English and Linguistics, so I didn’t count my choice of subjects to be a mistake. Also, in the forth year, I’ll properly learn Swedish from University. After graduating, I’ll apply for jobs in Sweden that can give me work visa and work for 5 years. Job Done. Another route, if I am not satisfied with the job, I can ALWAYS do a course in Belgium (European Studies in KU Leuven) as it does not cost much, and keep going. As long as I stay in ANY EU countries (apart from UK) for 5 or more years I am entitled a EU passport. Am I not realistic? I checked everything I can do for my dream! And I will go fund myself for those plans!

So, my friend, do NOT think it is impossible for me. When there is a will, there is a way. The path may be tough, but I will get through it and be so happy that you will never be.

Since my parents recommended the movie ‘Love, Rosie’ a few weeks ago, I finally had a chance to give it a go.

First of all, the trailer itself spoils a little bit too much, unfortunately, I had a look on it before watching the film. Therefore, the film to me is predictable. However, it is still very realistic and touching.

Why do I find it realistic? Well, it is about a pair of good friends growing up together, thinking that they don’t like each other (although they do), they probably find it awkward if they have to confess to each other as they know each other too well, and therefore, they miss a lot of chances. Also, they probably avoid the chances of losing their long-lasting friendship as well. We all know how it feels, that’s probably the biggest obstacles of confession of all time, fear of losing. Then, people get into the friend-zone, and just live there forever and ever, believing that he/ she is not the right one. Anyone who has been in a friendzone should watch this, as it feels so real!

It is touching as well, partly because it’s so realistic, also when you think about the whole story, it takes more than 10 years for them to notice that they are the perfect one for each other. Some of the clips in the film are also impressive to make the audience feel that way. When watching this film, you get tears of joy, and tears of sadness, what a ‘meal deal’, or ‘movie deal’. I haven’t read the novel on which the film is based, but I am tempted to read it now.

Definitely, a good film, highly recommended to all those ‘soldiers’ fighting in the friend-zone. Here is the kind of friend-zone fighters I have known by the way:

1: Infantry–> only serves the ‘Goddess’, but cannot do anything to her.
2: Navy –> richer than ‘Infantry’, using money and gifts to maintain relationship with the ‘Goddess’.
3: Horse soldier –> Can have the qualities of ‘infantry’ or ‘navy’, or both, but gets to be the ‘friend with benefits’ with the ‘Goddess’. Is also the highest rank of soldiers.
4: Arrow army –> Long distance relationship with the ‘Goddess’, using text/ Skype/ Facebook to contact, possibly haven’t even seen the ‘Goddess’ in real life.
5: Wizards (Evil): Getting alcohol or drugs to get benefits from the ‘Goddess’

Well, which one are you?

Fragments of memories

American singer Kelly Clarkson has a song called ‘A moment like this’, which says A moment like this, some people wait a lifetime.

Yes, life is often composed of the past, of the memories we have, for certain moments that we always want to remember. After having read quite much Romantic literature (in terms of Romantic period), I can see that most writers at that time agreed with that too. Take my favourite poet John Keats as an example, in his poem Bright Star (which is one of my favourite poems of his), he was trying to capture the moment, that he was leaning towards his girlfriend Fanny Browne; in his Ode to a Nightingale, he was trying to turn the moment that he saw the nightingale into literature. Everyone has different moments that he wants to remember: the happy ones, the sad ones, the romantic ones, the hilarious ones, the touching ones…….. But it has to be unique, and probably special.

Well, do we actually live in the past, or the present? (I think we can neglect the possibility of living in the future as we are not Marty in Back to the Future) We all live in the past. If we think about it this way, life is just composed of all the fragments of memories we had, the ‘present’ that we see, is just going to turn to the past, to the history in the next second, just like Jimmy Hendrix said ‘The story if life is quicker than the wink of an eye), the present does not mean much as it turns to the past too quick. That is probably why my favourite Romantic writer John Keats, immersed himself into describing the memories he had, trying to re-collect some of the best moments he had, with the ‘words brighter than bright, and fairer than fair’ (when he described Fanny in his letter) If, I can travel back in time, I would also like to go through certain moments in my life again. (And of course I would like to visit Keats, as he is sometimes my inspiration of writing.) And the following piece of writing, is for me to remember a friend who is going back home soon. (I rarely write poems, so I am not sure if it is a good one)

Forlorn! Forlorn!
For thou art gone.
Lasting fragments I get,
When thou art back for dawn.

Eternal Sunshine with the waking dream,
Woken by the hateful gleam.
Go back where you belong,
We are fish in different streams.

Having learned English language for more than a decade, the problem of accent never came across my mind till I watched the British movie recommended by my dad, Melody (1971). Although I was only like 5 years old when I watched it, I found that the English that people spoke in the movie was amazingly harmonic, it was, as I thought, beyond the level of language, I would describe it as a tune. The tone, the syllables, the sound, the rhythm were all perfect. Since then, I developed my passion towards British accent, but I merely did anything to try to adapt to this accent, maybe I was too young. As I grew older, I seemed to forget how good it was, until I watched the movie Serendipity (2001), with the stunning British Actress Kate Beckinsale in it.

Kate Beckinsale, as I have noticed, has a clear London accent, which is practically similar to the BBC accent. Her voice also worked amazingly with this accent, Listening to her speech is like listening to a fine piece of tune, as every syllable is uttered crystal clear, and the tone is so fine-tuned that, it is like an innocent girl speaking. It is indeed nicer than the voice of a Nightingale. Her accent, combining with her nice acts in the movie, made her so perfect to me, and it confused me: does an accent make someone perfect? Not sure, but I think it would indeed affect the impression of the other people. Yes, it makes me think that she is perfect. Although she has already got a daughter Lily, her voice and accent still make her seem like a child. Some people call her a MILF (which I found a bit offensive); some would call her a fit bird. Yes, she is fit, but ‘bird’ does not seem to be good enough, I would describe her as a swan. Stacy’s Mom has got it going on? No, Lily’s mom has got it going on!

On the train from Manchester to Edinburgh after the table-tennis match, my companion Ben, and I met a girl from Nottingham. Having heard Scottish accent while studying in Scotland for so long, this girl reminded me of what the perfect accent (she got BBC Accent just like Kate Beckinsale) of English should be like, thus redeeming my passion about the sound of English. Yes, I will try to get rid of my original accent, and get myself with this BBC accent. What’s the point of studying a language? Practical use, YES, but it is also about your passion about the language. If you like a language, you would try your best to reach the highest level of the language. It is not simply to use, but to enjoy the language. It is similar to the difference between surviving and living. Hopefully, within 3 years, I would speak like some of the greatest British politicians in the UK, with the perfect BBC accent, and it will be part of my identity.

Having studied English literature for two and a half semesters, I genuinely think that the creative pick-up lines nowadays can really be categorized as ‘literature’.

Literature comes from human life, just as Wordsworth claimed, poetry should come from rural life. John Keats had a humble life, and became a great writer. What does it tell us? Literature originates from human life, as writers get inspired from what they see in human life.

Pick up lines, or chat up lines, are as Wordsworth mentioned, human language, as they are actually uttered by normal people. One of my favourite writer, John Keats, also included a pick-up-line-like line in his letter to Fanny Browne, saying ‘I almost wish we were butterflies and liv’d but three summer days – three such days with you I could fill with more delight than fifty common years could ever contain.’ He, as a Romantic writer, is, in my opinion, the beginner of the pink-up culture, a good, healthy, and sensible culture. I would imagine that, Wordsworth, who also agreed that literature comes from normal life, would love the pick-up-line culture, and expand the lines into rhymes, rhymes into poems, poems to a poetry collection. Yes, pick-up poems, pick-up books, pick-up passages that would help you through the ice-breaking process, and kill the dead air.

Do not underestimate the structure and techniques in pick-up lines, as far as I know, a successful pick up line is usually a highly metaphorical one, hopefully rhyme a bit. For example, ‘If you can build any kind of ship in the world, what would you build? I would build a relationship!’ This one is quite a metaphorical one, it may take the hearer a few seconds to realize what happened, its construction is detailed too, putting the ‘ship’ into the word ‘relation’ to make it work, clever. If you have read the poetry of Keats’, you would also find his work is as this line, highly metaphorical. So how can you not call good pick-up lines literature? The line ‘I have got XX kg of muscle of steel, and sex appeal.’ shows that pick up lines can rhyme. No matter how Wordsworth put forward the idea for blank verse, lines that rhyme are always better and more memorable.

Pick up lines are usually successful in making the hearer laugh, and it is usually the first step in building the possible ship, what ship? Relationship. But if you are going for one, don’t quote from Shakespeare for a pick-up line, because it is highly risky. Remember a quote from A Mid Summer Night’s Dream? ‘Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind, And therefore is winged Cupid painted blind.‘ It can be seen as offensive. And for Much Ado About Nothing, ‘For which of my bad parts didst thou fall in love with me?’ Do not try it either, you might get a reply with the title of the play, ‘Just that one, but then I knew it was Much Ado About Nothing.’

Pick-up lines are generally inspired by creativity and the texts you read, the more you read, the more things you can make reference to. For instance, if you do not know anything about the Science, you can never come across the line ‘Hi, I need to accuse you of causing Global Warming because you are too hot.’ Wordsworh’s companion Coleridge is correct, poetry, or perhaps literature, is as logical as Science, but just deeper as it includes Science. There should be a course in English Literature degree called ‘Pick-up course’, because it is an integral part of ANY LITERATURE in the world, and is potentially a new favourite genre of literature. Yes, I am sure if a person can create a pick-up poetry, pick-up story, pick-up biography, or maybe a pick-up novel, he can probably be crowned as the next Keats!
