Well, what’s worse than getting an offer that you know you would certainly like to go for, but you can’t? I would rather have my toenails peeled off one by one with pliers! Therefore, I kindly ask for any funding possible which would support my PhD study!

Why a Linguistics PhD?!

Having been in Scotland for five years and studying Linguistics for four years, I have been amazed by the indivisible link between language and identity.  Therefore, I intend to do a project on how the British Colonial period had an impact on Hong Kong Cantonese, and how the linguistics changes contributed to the reluctance of Hong Kong people to admit that they are actually Chinese. While there have been many researches done on how Chinese speakers learn English, the field on how English changed Chinese is still a fresh research area. I would like to be a pioneer academic to investigate in this field.

My Project:

My project is titled ‘The Impact on Hong Kong Cantonese by the British Educational Policy during the Colonial Period’. It would involve three main parts:

1. To conduct the research, the English Language education policy in Hong Kong from the early colonial period to the beginning of 21st Century will be analysed in order to get a grasp on the degree that English came into contact with Hong Kong Cantonese.

2. The unique features of Hong Kong Cantonese which came from English will then be found out. The loanwords from English to Hong Kong Cantonese will be categorised to see what side of culture English affected Hong Kong more.

3. Discussion of the change in the view of national identity of Hong Kong people brought by the influence of English in the colonial period (e.g. how? to what extent?)

This is a very brief introduction of my intended project and you are of course welcome to ask me more about it!

What I Would Offer for Your Investment:
£10- You will receive  important updates on my progress of my research project via e-mail, with ocassional discussion on the interesting reading I found.

£30- You will receive a postcard

£40- You will receive 4 free Chinese Lessons through Skype (I have been doing private tutoring during my time in Aberdeen so I believe you are guaranteed to learn something!)

£50- You will be in the Acknowledgement in my thesis (of course, only if you want)

£70- You will receive 8 free Chinese Lessons through Skype

£90- I will send you a copy of my thesis once I have finished it

£200- All of the above, and I will send you a personal letter to you every 3 months to keep you updated on the progress of my project.

Last but not least, if I can finally afford to get into the programme, I would

1. Set up a YouTube Channel (I already have one right now : https://www.youtube.com/user/711hayes but I will set up a new one) to keep all the contributors updated with my study in Ireland every week the least.

2. set up a new blog to discuss books I have been reading for my project (of course the interesting one!) (I do have a blog now: https://hayeschan.wordpress.com/author/hayeschan/ but yea I will set a new one up)

Help spread the word!

And for anyone who would like to contribute, here’s my funding page: https://www.gofundme.com/fund-my-phd-at-uni-college-dublin

Being taken over by The Fear

Lily Allen’s The Fear can probably be crowned The National Anthem of the 21st Century.

‘I want to be rich and I want lots of money
I don’t care about clever I don’t care about funny
I want loads of clothes and fuckloads of diamonds
I heard people die while they are trying to find them’

These opening lines cannot be more real. People nowadays don’t give a crap about anything other than money. It’s easy to say we shouldn’t be too materialistic, but it’s hard to put this principle into life. At the end of the day, money means power, and it gives you a very comfortable life. It’s difficult, if not impossible, not to be engulfed by the greed inside us. Again, at the end of the day, ‘I’m not a saint but I’m not a sinner’.

‘And I’ll take my clothes off and it will be shameless
‘Cause everyone knows that’s how you get famous.’

This is exactly the view of the majority people I believe. We don’t seem to care how we get money, we don’t care about whether it’s ethic to do something in exchange of fame, glory, and eventually money. Is it the correct mindset? I don’t know. Living in a corrupted world, I don’t know what is real, and what I meant to feel anymore.

And here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25QrnxD-NB4 you get to hear the great national anthem of the 21 century.

I do admire Lily Allen’s ability to write lyrics in a very very poetic form (at least to me it is so poetic). But the most important thing, is I think she does write people’s heart. I personally think, she did write a lot that reflects my life. The Fear is one of them, The Littlest Things… ehm… I may probably have encountered something similar.

Well, listening to Lily Allen’s at least gives me some comfort, so I know there are people outside who could still see the truth.

‘Sometimes I find myself sittin’ back and reminiscing,
especially when I have to watch other people kissin
Sometimes I wish we could just pretend
Even if only for one weekend
So come on, Tell me
Is this the end?
I was so lost back then
But with a little help from my friends
I found the light in the tunnel at the end’

A Little Sight

Yesterday, as I walked along the street back to my flat, I saw a mother and a daughter (around 6 years old I guess) running to catch a bus. They were running fast, and were trying their best, and with smiles on their faces. I would describe it as quite an interesting and ‘adorable’ scene. It reminds me of the times where I caught the public transports with my parents when I was younger.

We used to live on an island, and ferry was the main transport for us to go somewhere else. As I remember, everytime we went to the ferry, we were rushing, as we were almost always quite late for many different reasons: it took me too much time to finish my meal; mum forgot to do her make-up; dad needed to go to the toilet before going…… ANY REASONS you can possibly think of. Sometimes of course, we would be late for the ferry; while most of the time we could make it. Yea, everytime we made it we would be so happy, it was like an achievement. And, yea, that is my childhood memory.

Different people have different ways of living, so they all have their own stories. Take ‘catching the bus’ as an example, if you are so posh, that you never even have a chance to get into a public transport in your life, you would miss the fun of catching a bus. If you are so posh or your family is so strict, that you never go into a McDonald’s in your life (don’t be surprised, I have seen those people!), you probably missed out a lot as a child, because McDonald’s is like a MagicLand for kids, it is like the kids’ ‘bar’ or ‘club’, where you can have food or drinks that are tasty, but also unhealthy for you. As a kid, everytime when my parents took me to McDonald’s, I was always happy, especially when I got to have the deep-fried food, that my parents wouldn’t allow me to have a lot, but still gave me the chance to get once a week.

Everyone has different background; different background brings different stories; different stories give different colours to life; different lives, leads to different people. That’s true, but however you are, you can always do what you want, and shouldn’t be restricted too much by the social norms. Just like Warren Buffett, who is extremely rich. The 84-year-old World’s Top Investor, despite being so rich, has simple taste of food, just like a normal child, as he still drinks coca cola, and goes to McDonald’s on a regular basis. What I’m trying to point out is, don’t be bounded by your past so much, just do something that can really make you happy, and it can be something simple! 🙂

Having studied English literature for two and a half semesters, I genuinely think that the creative pick-up lines nowadays can really be categorized as ‘literature’.

Literature comes from human life, just as Wordsworth claimed, poetry should come from rural life. John Keats had a humble life, and became a great writer. What does it tell us? Literature originates from human life, as writers get inspired from what they see in human life.

Pick up lines, or chat up lines, are as Wordsworth mentioned, human language, as they are actually uttered by normal people. One of my favourite writer, John Keats, also included a pick-up-line-like line in his letter to Fanny Browne, saying ‘I almost wish we were butterflies and liv’d but three summer days – three such days with you I could fill with more delight than fifty common years could ever contain.’ He, as a Romantic writer, is, in my opinion, the beginner of the pink-up culture, a good, healthy, and sensible culture. I would imagine that, Wordsworth, who also agreed that literature comes from normal life, would love the pick-up-line culture, and expand the lines into rhymes, rhymes into poems, poems to a poetry collection. Yes, pick-up poems, pick-up books, pick-up passages that would help you through the ice-breaking process, and kill the dead air.

Do not underestimate the structure and techniques in pick-up lines, as far as I know, a successful pick up line is usually a highly metaphorical one, hopefully rhyme a bit. For example, ‘If you can build any kind of ship in the world, what would you build? I would build a relationship!’ This one is quite a metaphorical one, it may take the hearer a few seconds to realize what happened, its construction is detailed too, putting the ‘ship’ into the word ‘relation’ to make it work, clever. If you have read the poetry of Keats’, you would also find his work is as this line, highly metaphorical. So how can you not call good pick-up lines literature? The line ‘I have got XX kg of muscle of steel, and sex appeal.’ shows that pick up lines can rhyme. No matter how Wordsworth put forward the idea for blank verse, lines that rhyme are always better and more memorable.

Pick up lines are usually successful in making the hearer laugh, and it is usually the first step in building the possible ship, what ship? Relationship. But if you are going for one, don’t quote from Shakespeare for a pick-up line, because it is highly risky. Remember a quote from A Mid Summer Night’s Dream? ‘Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind, And therefore is winged Cupid painted blind.‘ It can be seen as offensive. And for Much Ado About Nothing, ‘For which of my bad parts didst thou fall in love with me?’ Do not try it either, you might get a reply with the title of the play, ‘Just that one, but then I knew it was Much Ado About Nothing.’

Pick-up lines are generally inspired by creativity and the texts you read, the more you read, the more things you can make reference to. For instance, if you do not know anything about the Science, you can never come across the line ‘Hi, I need to accuse you of causing Global Warming because you are too hot.’ Wordsworh’s companion Coleridge is correct, poetry, or perhaps literature, is as logical as Science, but just deeper as it includes Science. There should be a course in English Literature degree called ‘Pick-up course’, because it is an integral part of ANY LITERATURE in the world, and is potentially a new favourite genre of literature. Yes, I am sure if a person can create a pick-up poetry, pick-up story, pick-up biography, or maybe a pick-up novel, he can probably be crowned as the next Keats!

Sharing a little funny thing of my High School.” />

Happy Easter to all of you, I hope you all enjoyed the Easter Holiday! 😀

April, is normally the time to prepare for the exam for high school. In my high school, we had a subject called ICT, something like ‘the use of computer’. I remember once in the exam, we had to type a passage in Chinese (pretty sure it was the lyrics of a song). As all of my friends may know, in all the ICT lessons, I read online stories/ passages, and never listened. Of course I had now idea how to type Chinese! However, I still got a very high grade (equivalent to A+) in the exam, here is my trick:

I knew it was the lyrics of a song that can be found ONLINE, I asked my friend to type the name of the song on google for me, then just did COPY AND PASTE to the word document that I needed to hand in. How easy was it! Then I got a very high score, and because of this, my friend who helped also got a very high score!

Moral of the story: Sometimes you just need to think outside the box, and you may be able to do something a lot more easily. Also, sometimes we should offer some help while we can, and we may get payback!

Valentine’s Day

Valentine's Day

Haven’t posted for a while, because I had a lot of exams and table-tennis going on lately. Finally got some time today!

Tomorrow, is the Valentine’s Day, personally I’d say it’s a worth-celebrating days for couples, or for singles as well.
Here’s a funny moment when I talked to my friend today:
My friend: Have you got a date for Valentine’s Day?
Me: Yes, the 14th of February.
Haha, yes, I am single, and have been single for….. well, long enough. Although Valentine’s Day is not really related to me, I appreciate the meaning of it. It gives an opportunity for couples to celebrate, singles to make a move, and probably this is how girls learn to make chocolate and boys learn to make origami roses.

Genuinely, I think it is a day for single people to make a move towards the ones you like. Honestly the effect of making a move on this day does not necessarily increase your chance of success (I guess), but if you don’t do it, then you will probably just wait, wait, and wait, keep on finding excuses of not doing anything. It is not good. The worst scenario, is just a rejection, nothing else! (Although it is PAINFUL, still better than not knowing anything)

Anyway, enjoy the Valentine’s Day! I would be surprised if I get any unusual messages tomorrow haha. Well, for those who have a crush, step in tomorrow. For those who don’t, just wait, and the right person would appear in front of you at the right time!

UKCC LEVEL 1 Table-Tennis Coaching Course Day 1

Woke up at 5a.m., got dressed, and packed my stuff, and caught the bus at 7 to Dundee for the table-tennis coaching course.

Flattered by the coaching tutor, as he claimed that my backhand (which I think is my weakness) is quite good and consistent, and asked me for demonstration for backhand drive and backhand block. He didn’t quite believe that I have only played table-tennis for JUST MORE than a year. (Quite satisfied that I have just played 1 year and now I am trying to get the coaching certificate!)

Looking forward to the second day of the course. It should be on 8/2, but the venue is unavailable on that day, so they changed it to 1/2, and I would be unavailable due to the SSS Championship, so I would be doing it on 22/2 in Aberdeen! No travel required!!! The only thing is that I need to demonstrate forehand push to the kids (which is what I don’t do!)… Well anyway, happy as the coaching tutor said my skills are relatively advanced!

A dream with Shakespeare

A dream with Shakespeare

Happy new year to all!

While preparing for the exams lately, I started to have some very weird dreams. Yesterday, I met one of our well-known playwright, William Shakespeare. It was great fun, and amazingly I remember quite much of the dream, so I decide to share it here. Probably, the reason for having such a dream is that I have prepared for the exam the course ‘Encounter with Shakespeare’ for quite a while. Here it goes….

I was in the town centre doing the countdown for new year (Hogmanay as I live in Scotland). It was 12, ‘Happy New Year!!!’ I heard, as people were shouting. While a nice-looking woman was coming towards me, and trying to give me a hug for the celebration, every one suddenly disappeared….

‘What happened?! Where is every one?! Is 2014 a year of…’
‘Doubt truth to be a liar, but never doubt I write!’ Someone said to me from my behind.

I turned round, and got shocked…. as I saw a familiar face which appears on the cover of my Shakespeare course book.

Yes, it was Shakespeare, William Shakespeare.

‘Did…. did time-travel work? and why are you here?’ I asked.
‘Dost thou not know, thou art in my world?’ he said calmly.
‘Really? How did you come though?’ I started feeling like being in the world of the film Midnight in Paris.
‘Thou shalt not know, thou do not need to know. Come gentleman, I hope we shall drink down all the unkindness of 2013, and welcome the new year!’ he suggested.

He then drew something in air with his pen, and there came a table, with good wine, and food.
‘Fantastic! How did you do that!?’ I was surprised seeing that.
‘Thou fool, I am a writer! So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see, so long lives this, and this gives life to thee! If this be error, and upon me prov’d, I never writ…’
‘Oh okay, I do not quite understand what you mean, but so nice to meet you! Why did you come to visit me?’
‘Thou art one of the characters I have ever created. I enjoy writing so much, and I just thought about celebrating New Year with one of my characters! Thou shalt feel lucky!’ he answered while giving me the glass of wine.
‘Oh really, so you made all people disappeared? And why did you choose me?’
‘I did, and why I chose thee? Not quite a reason, I thought about Hamlet and Leontes, but they are still mourning; Oberon and Titania but I am afraid of their magical liquid; and Viola and Olivia, but they are busy discussing about love. And, thou seem to be a choice.’
‘Oh I am glad!.’ I said with surprise, but still not quite believing what happened.

‘Come, come, good wine is a good familiar creature if it be well-used. So I just use, or drink, it with thee! Happy new year, and cheers!’ He said while delivering the glass of wine to me.
We drank, I sang ‘A moment like this, some people wait a life-time, for a moment like this….’.
‘If love be music, play on.’ he seemed to appreciate my singing.

After the singing, he asked me about what I want to do in my future.
‘I am not sure yet, but probably something about writing?’ I answered, as writing is fun.
‘Be a writer then?’
‘To be, or not to be, that is the question. I do not know whether I am good enough in writing.’
‘That is not the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves! A fool thinks himself to be wise, but a wise man knows himself to be a fool. Thou would be alright I am sure!’ he gave me confidence, as we just finished our wine and food.

Ya, I do the Shakespeare course, and I should definitely ask him on his plays so that I could understand the plays for the exam!

‘Sir, I am doing a course about you in university, and I will be having an exam soon…’
‘Thou shalt not ask me anything. I am a writer, I write, not analyze for anyone. Thou would not ask Viola about her speech to Olivia, she speaks, she does not analyze for anyone. Same principle. Just do it, lad, no pressure!’
‘Oh yea, I should, and I have to do it properly!’ I answered with a bit disappointment, but it seems logic.

‘What time is it?’ he asked.
‘um… it is 3 in the morning, or you may say at night.’ I answered after checking my watch.
‘My friend, I have to go now, to go for Perdita’s wedding, it will begin soon! It is better 3 hours too soon than 1 minute late! Good night, good night! Parting is such a sweet sorrow, that I shall say good night till it be morrow!’ he said, while using his pen to draw himself a carriage.
‘Yes, good night, thank you for the good time!’ I waved at him.

Then I woke up. Yes, genuinely it was the mid-winter night’s dream! What a start for a new year!
