This review is about a 46-minute short film by Makoto Shinkai, ‘Garden of Words’ (2013).

As in any other Shinkai’s work, ‘Garden of Words’ is very beautiful in terms of its graphic, and its script.

‘Garden of Words’ is considered a romance and a drama, about the encounter between the 15-year-old student who aspires to be a shoemaker, Takao Akizuki, and Yukari Yukino, a 27-year-old woman who skips work most time, enjoying beer and chocolate. The plot develops as they continue to meet up in the Garden during every rainy morning.

Unlike his previous work, ‘Garden of Words’ is rather light, it doesn’t spend too much time on the setting, and leaves more time for the development of characters. This can be seen as improvement of Makoto Shinkai. So this short film probably provides Shinkai a valuable experience for him to produce his most famous work up to date, ‘Your Name’ (2016).

The plot in this film is very, very simple and common, just like some other romances. But the feelings of the two main characters are finely portrayed. In a short 46-minute film, audience can expect to feel more than they can feel from many more lengthy films. It perfectly describes ‘love can hurt people, but can also give hope to people’. I also like the ending: if Takao gets on with Yukari, the consequence may not be good due to the pressure from other people and the fact that Takao would not be able to pursue his dream; but if Takao pursues Yukari again when he has become a shoemaker (his dream), that would be a different story. So this film, in my opinion, is quite positive.
Rain comes too quick, for them to meet;
Yet leaves too soon, for them to leave.

So today I’d share my piano cover of the song ‘Through the Years and Far Away’, it is from the short film called ‘Voices of a Distant Star’. Hope you guys would enjoy it

Lyrics:

Hello, little star
Are you doing fine?
I’m lonely as everything in birth

Sometimes in the dark
When I close my eyes
I dream of you, the planet earth

If I could fly across this night
Faster than the speed of light
I would spread these wings of mine

Through the years and far away
Far beyond the milky way
See the shine that never blinks
The shine that never fades

Thousand years and far away
Far beyond the silky way
You’re the shine that never blinks
The shine that never dies

Hello, tiny star
Can you hear me call?
I’m so blind as everything at birth

If I could flow against these nights
Straiter than the string of light
I would lay these hands on time

Through the years and far away
Far beyond the milky way
See the shine that never blinks
The shine that never fades

Thousand years and far away
Far beyond the silky way
You’re the shine that never blinks
The shine that never dies

Through the years and far away
Far beyond the milky way
You’re the shine that never blinks
The shine that never dies

Having been a horse racing fan for a long time now, the last thing I would want to see in a horse race, is when horses get injuries. There have been many, many those saddening moments as I can still recall, for great horses such as Babaro, Absolute Champion, Red Cardeaux and Can Do, who all unfortunately passed away in their last races. Yesterday, there came a new upsetting moment in this respect: the death of Rapper Dragon.

Rapper Dragon is, despite his decease, is still the first and only triple crown horse in Hong Kong. Yesterday (7/5), he was racing in the Champion Mile, which was deemed to be the confirmation of his eminence and promise. Never did we know, that the race turned into an absolute tragedy when the legendary, and my well-respected Rapper Dragon pulled up with a pelvic fracture and later passed away from his injury.

There have been many blames against either the jockey Joao Moreira, the horse trainer George Moore, or the owner. His decease has been a fact now, and I do not think there is any point blaming anyone, as it will not lighten the tragic mood. I do believe the fatal injury comes from the over-frequent schedule of the horse. There are observable signs showing the fatigue of Rapper Dragon in his workout. But this is an accident, and absolutely no one wanted it to happen. What I do not like, is the horse trainers who push the horses too hard (especially when they are young). They do need time to grow, just as human!

As an experienced horse-racing fan, it was very crushing to watch the race. Rapper Dragon did try his best in every race. He is not a horse which can walk-over the others, he does need to strive his utmost to win (This can be seen from his winning distance and the way he won). He is certainly loyal. If you look at his second last race (The Chairman’s Trophy), you can see he was acting a little bit weird towards the end with his right leg (which I believe is the sign of the accident). Yet, he still retained his lead till the end. I believe his old opponent (Pakistan Star), who lost to him 3 times out of 3 him, would also be saddened by the news, because he would now no longer be able to beat Rapper Dragon, due to the passing of the to-be Horse of the Year.

You flew in the field without wings,
You always give your everything.
Never shall your glory be blackened,
My dearest, Rapper Dragon.

Rest in peace

There are not many woman who could make Hermione (from Harry Potter) looks average, or make Daenerys (from Game of Thrones) looks like a potato. But Kate Beckinsale is one. Her classy movements, perfect English accent, warm smiles, fun personality, everything, can just make everyone lost just by talking to her: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2avOxIQr-vc

Is it just me, or Kate Beckinsale is just one of the most flawless human on Earth? I used not to believe in Vampires, but Kate is 43 and she is looking like 25. With some naughty pranksters from time to time, she is definitely the dream of human race. It not really only about the way she looks, but the way she talks. She can definitely finish one off just by talking. Her eloquence just makes her like a queen or an angel! Her speeches are just super eloquent that she must have come to the wrong century!

If I ever own a bakery, I’ll name it Kate Bake & Sale!

On Earth, there is no one better than Emam Watson.

In terms of acting, she is undoubtedly the best actress in the world, with her sweet smiles, cute voice, awesomely posh accent….With Emma Watson, there is no point for the same film having another actors/ actresses, because she can make the film good without any help.

Apart from her career, she is still a decent woman, always smiling to everyone, doing good deeds, helping to make the world a fairer place for everyone…. She is definitely a heroine, an angel, the saver of the world.

Everything she says is the words of wisdom; her good deeds are enough to make herself a goddess; she is just a legend!

‘The Fault in Our Stars’, in my opinion, is an average film. Probably because of the fact that I’ve seen ‘Love Story ‘ (1970), then the it will be too predictable to me. Trust me, they have the same formula, just that not many people know ‘Love Story’ so they get so touched by ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ But to be honest, the book is better than the movie, and there is a scene which I particularly like.

If you know the plot, you know the two main characters do not really treat their relationship too seriously (because they are afraid that the death of one of them would hurt the other too much) until the dinner of a trip they go together. After the dinner, the boy declares his love for the girl for the first time.

‘I am in love with you’ (p.153)

As a male, when you declare to someone you love, you cannot be like a moron. If you are not ready, don’t do it just yet; if she is not ready, don’t start it just yet. Once you’ve decided to do, go do it. You have nothing much to lose. His simple but direct statement goes through to give the girl a shock, before he continues to say ‘I am’, meaning ‘I do NOT care how much time we have left but I have to say it!’

‘I  am in love with you, and I am not in
business of denying myself the simple
pleasure of saying true things.’

He refers the reason for his declaration to the simple pleasure of saying the truest things in his heart, which he refuses to deny. He is like ‘I ONLY WANT TO SAY THE TRUE THINGS!’

‘I’m in love with you, and i know that
love is just a shout into the void,
and that oblivion is inevitable,
and that we ‘re all doomed and that there
will come a day when all our labor
has been returned to dust,
and I know the sun will swallow the only
earth we’ll ever have,
and I am in love with you.’

He keeps repeating the sense that ‘I am in love with you’ to strengthen the mood, but this is not the main point here. Here, we can see an interesting point of view. Yep, life is too short for anything to be left unsaid. There must be a day when the earth is doomed, and human race gets extinct, and there is no point not to express yourself while you can. ‘A shout into the void’ is similar to Shakepare’s ‘Macbeth’ when he wrote ‘Life is but a walking shadow’It’s a pessimistic point of view for life, but it is somehow true. No matter how much you achieved in life, there must be a time, when your existence is no longer available, not even in anyone’s memory. However pessimistic the world seems (even the boy knows that), he literally ‘does NOT give a shit’, because he is in love with her. What a very courageous, and great, way of declaration.

Whatever we have in life just happens on Earth, on the mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam (Carl Sagan). Do we live in a world in which we can touch? Or do we live in a world in which we create our own mind? No one can ever answer that. Life is too short for anyone to find out the answer. All we can do is to do our best, to leave nothing unsaid, undone, while we can. Don’t be afraid to fail, because no one can even remember what you have done forever.

Mobile Phone

maxresdefault

I remember when I was in Stockholm for a trip, my phone died on the first day. Thinking about it, now I realise human has already been invaded by mobile phones as phones have already become part of a human body. I can foresee the future that in 20 years time, when a child is born, there will be a phone attached to the child as part of  the birth certificate.

Right after I realised my phone died, the emptiness in my mind was comparable to the emptiness of my stomach when having starved for a couple of days while still not having food, but seeing a tard having a big mac meal in front of you. Not using a phone, is like completely losing connection to anyone in the world, as it will give you hell (all americans rejects?). If you go out to a restaurant, and pub, you will see most of the people using their phones like every 5 seconds as if they are in love with their phones. No wonder why people don’t speak face-to-face much anymore.

What’s the point of being so eager to look at the pictures of the other’s achievements? Or just the bits of life? While you can have a good time with your friends? And why don’t you spend  the time to create your own achievement? Considering if you sleep 8 hours everyday, meaning you have 16 hours of activity a day. If you check your phone every 15 minutes (each time lasts 5 minutes), you end up spending 5 hours and 30 seconds everyday just checking your phone. In 5 and a half hours, you can do 2 hours of sports, 1 hour of reading/ picking up new hobbies. Then, everyone can be fitter than Lionel Messi, play better music than Hayes Chan (just a joke), and be more multi-talented than Simon Cowell. See how valuable every second of your life is? Even if you don’t have a good job, not a good family, and poor, you are still the winner of your life, as you are really living, if you can use your time wise. So from now on, why don’t we just try to leave our phone untouched, for … maybe an hour or two, and live your life? ”You just have to see that it’s wrapped in beauty and hidden away in between the seconds of your life. If you don’t stop for a minute, you might miss it.” (Cashback–2006)

So there has been a ‘Blind-date with a book’ event in university since the start of this week. I, as an English student, have always loved to read books apart from the ones in the course because reading them is as boring as watching the grass grows inch by inch. Also, I was attracted by the word ‘Blind-Date’ as it sounds like there are good books there, and it is only £2 for a book. So I thought, ‘Why not? Maybe the worst book I could get is a 50 shades of Bloody Grey.’

Having the preparation of getting myself into the book with terrible lines (like ‘His voice is warm and husky like dark melted chocolate fudge caramel… or something’, ‘I feel the color in my cheeks rising again. I must be the color of the communist manifesto.’, and ‘Holy Crap! He’s wearing a white shirt!’), I went into the book store, and looking for my book, my soulmate, the ONE book I can date. I am usually not lucky in lottery and things, so I doubt I would really get a book I really like, but a book that allows me to escape from the torture of the English Literature Essay Writing would do the job, as a One Night Stand with a book.

The ‘Blind-Date’ books were covered in cardboard covers with descriptions of genres and a quote written on it. There were like 5, with 3 being poetry, which had been eliminated because I’ve had enough of poetry lately. The other one is mystery. Well, not too much of a fan of mystery as I have the memory of a gold fish and I will definitely forget some details in the book before I try to solve the mystery as Detective Chan. The last one…. the genre says ‘Theatre’. I remember some people say the word ‘theatre’ when they actually mean ‘cinema’, so I thought ‘Oh dear, it must be made into a film, so it must be quite good.’ I never have an expectation of it being like my favourite Nicholas Sparks’ books, but at least it’s a film. The worst case is that it would have the title of some…numbers like 50, and something grey? I did not look at the quote as I could not read that hand-writing and I thought it would not matter much. So, I bravely picked it up, and took it to the check-out and purchased it.

Then, I took it home, and slowly unwrapped my ‘date’. ‘Well even if it is 50 Shades of Grey, it’s fine, at least it would allow me to escape from the literature course.’ …. I tore the cardboard slowly from the middle, and I saw a logo, which literally made me mourn for the £2 I paid for that. The logo, is a well-known one. Well played, Penguin. I looked at the title, it says ‘Hedda Glaber and other Plays’ by Henrik Ibsen. Oh My God, this is worse than getting the grey book. It’s like going to a blind-date, and you think you picked up a fit bird, but it turns out that it is literally a bird. I never thought they would put those kinds of literature in the event, it’s like hiding a landmine under a rocky road where no one could see. Well played, well played.

Consistent Relationship

Relationship builds on trust. Without trust, a relationship can probably never grow well. It’s like growing a plant, you have to sometimes water it and take care of it, but sometimes you should leave some space for it to grow.

Relationship is an interesting, yet a wee little bit tricky when it comes to how you handle it. Couples in love of course want to see each other as many as possible (theoretically), despite the fact that individually, they still need their own space. However, seeing each other too much is probably also a risk. How? It MIGHT increase the chance of couples getting tired of each other before anything better can happen. So, what’s right to do? I guess, just set a time or two every week for meeting, just the couples themselves, to maintain the consistency of the relationship. The other time depends on context, depends on what the other one wants to do. It’s unfair to take up people’s time which is supposed to be spent as their own wish.

So, couples not spending every second together makes perfect sense honestly. This is where the tricky part is, TRUST. Andreas Capellanus (12th Century) wrote that ‘the lover is always fear that his love may not gain its desire. He fears anything that might harm it anyway.’ You have to trust that she is not doing anything to harm the relationship  that would completely ruin your mind if it happens. She’s not a property, but a partner rather. So it is the most terrible act if you control her everyday life. Imagine if you are treated that way, you wouldn’t be happy. This is how a relationship can be fun, with TRUST playing a part in it. It would be a great pleasure if you know you are trusting what is worth trusting.

Well, maybe enough for now. Why haven’t I updated for a while? I don’t know 😀 All I’m gonna say is, building a relationship is like building a bridge between two islands. Now the project begins, and you have to communicate with each other, to make the project works, to connect you two, just like the title of the song ‘vi to er smeltet sammen’ (Okay, maybe a bit cheesy but it means ‘the two of us melt into one’) Ahhh talking about this, the film ‘500 Days of Summer’ comes to mind. Good luck to all of us!

The film ‘Fifty SHades of Grey’ is such a big hit on the Valentine’s Day this year. I expected a great film with a nice plot. I thought it would be good, even though IMDB rated it 3.3/10. After seeing the film, I finally understand why. I felt like paying a few quid, just to see some of the sex scenes in the film, and see, how dreadful is that?!

The beginning of the film is already problematic, during the interview of Ana and Grey. First, in an interview, how is it possible, to flirt like them. And, asking questions like ‘Are you gay?’ !?!? What?! Second, no matter how many times I think, think, and re-think, I still don’t understand how they fall in love in just an interview. Is it because girls always fall for powerful guys? This is the most possible answer that I could think of, could be out of context though. Or is it something called ‘love at first sight’, that idiots like me can never understand? I just don’t understand it anymore. Or is it this easy to flirt with a girl, just by looking her in the eyes for a couple of seconds?

Quite a big part of the film deals with the contract of the sex acts that Grey wants to have with Ana. Well, to be fair, the contract itself is in details, so, kind of good. It takes, almost an hour, for Ana, to think about, whether to sign the contract, or not. And, it ends up, her just saying, ‘OK’ when Grey gives her a kiss. Just an ‘Okay’? Doesn’t it seem to casual? I just felt like having a whole hour wasted. It is totally dreadful. Also, it is too predictable for her to say ‘yes’ to the contract. In the middle of the film, do you think Ana, would say NO and terminate the contract? So this huge part does not seem relevant to me.

Talking about acting, it is fine. I could try to see the director trying to capture the beauty of Ana, which is her side glance, her side glance, and her side glance. Her side glance appears more than 10 times exactly the same in the film, quite iconic to be honest, and everytime it is Grey touching her cheek.

In general, I would put this film in the category of ‘Twilight’. Without a pair of decent-looking main characters, this film is unlikely to be popular. The film also suggests the idea that rich and powerful guys are girls-magnet, this gives me aspiration to get rich. Such a good film, isn’t it, being so inspirational! I can imagine if Grey is poor and ugly, this can be a horror flick called ‘Fifty Ways of Getting Laid’.
