Well, what’s worse than getting an offer that you know you would certainly like to go for, but you can’t? I would rather have my toenails peeled off one by one with pliers! Therefore, I kindly ask for any funding possible which would support my PhD study!

Why a Linguistics PhD?!

Having been in Scotland for five years and studying Linguistics for four years, I have been amazed by the indivisible link between language and identity.  Therefore, I intend to do a project on how the British Colonial period had an impact on Hong Kong Cantonese, and how the linguistics changes contributed to the reluctance of Hong Kong people to admit that they are actually Chinese. While there have been many researches done on how Chinese speakers learn English, the field on how English changed Chinese is still a fresh research area. I would like to be a pioneer academic to investigate in this field.

My Project:

My project is titled ‘The Impact on Hong Kong Cantonese by the British Educational Policy during the Colonial Period’. It would involve three main parts:

1. To conduct the research, the English Language education policy in Hong Kong from the early colonial period to the beginning of 21st Century will be analysed in order to get a grasp on the degree that English came into contact with Hong Kong Cantonese.

2. The unique features of Hong Kong Cantonese which came from English will then be found out. The loanwords from English to Hong Kong Cantonese will be categorised to see what side of culture English affected Hong Kong more.

3. Discussion of the change in the view of national identity of Hong Kong people brought by the influence of English in the colonial period (e.g. how? to what extent?)

This is a very brief introduction of my intended project and you are of course welcome to ask me more about it!

What I Would Offer for Your Investment:
£10- You will receive  important updates on my progress of my research project via e-mail, with ocassional discussion on the interesting reading I found.

£30- You will receive a postcard

£40- You will receive 4 free Chinese Lessons through Skype (I have been doing private tutoring during my time in Aberdeen so I believe you are guaranteed to learn something!)

£50- You will be in the Acknowledgement in my thesis (of course, only if you want)

£70- You will receive 8 free Chinese Lessons through Skype

£90- I will send you a copy of my thesis once I have finished it

£200- All of the above, and I will send you a personal letter to you every 3 months to keep you updated on the progress of my project.

Last but not least, if I can finally afford to get into the programme, I would

1. Set up a YouTube Channel (I already have one right now : https://www.youtube.com/user/711hayes but I will set up a new one) to keep all the contributors updated with my study in Ireland every week the least.

2. set up a new blog to discuss books I have been reading for my project (of course the interesting one!) (I do have a blog now: https://hayeschan.wordpress.com/author/hayeschan/ but yea I will set a new one up)

Help spread the word!

And for anyone who would like to contribute, here’s my funding page: https://www.gofundme.com/fund-my-phd-at-uni-college-dublin

Food and Girls

I am quite a good chef, and everytime I cook I try to think about how to improve my dish next time. And now I discover the connection between food an girls.

A good dish often looks good, smells good, and tastes good. It is the kind of food that you would like to keep in your mouth for as long as possible because once it went down to your digestive system, it is gone. This kind of food, is just like the beauty and cuteness of Emma Watson, and Kate Beckinsale.

There are many ways to cook: bake, fry, steam, boil….. Among those, deep-frying is the most special one, as it completely changes how the ingredients taste. The first few bites of a deep-fried product are probably quite enjoyable, as it has a crispy crust surrounding the hot stuff inside. However, it wouldn’t take long until you get sick of it because of the oil. Deep-frying, is basically just giving a crust to cover the food, just like the girls having enormous amount of make-up, or plastic surgeries, just to make themselves like the ‘deep-fried’ food. With everyone covering themselves with the ‘deep-fried’ crust, it is hard to spot the difference between Emma Watson and the others, until they uncover themselves. But what’s the point of it then? Everyone is just a clone?

Well, sometimes, all you need is just a normal bowl of rice. It does not have the beauty of Kate Beckinsale or the cuteness of Emma Watson, but at least, it is real.

‘After setting up the Guinness Record of beer tasting

I departed to Kronenbourg for a trip’

                                                                                                                           1664

The trip to Kronenbourg in France was completely random. Having no companion travelling with me, I decided to visit this little town in France for its fame on the best beer in the world, Kronenbourg Blanc. The journey from Aberdeen to Kronenbourg took a good couple days and cost a giant budget, and therefore I chose to stay in a cheap motel for the trip, and the motel itself, is called Hoegaarden.

I arrived in Kronenbourg on the 11th of July, 1664. The first thing I did, was to check-in for my stay in Hoegarrden. My first impression of the motel was that, it was pretty bright, but it did not look fancy at all. My thought of Coors Light came to mind: Cheap beer isn’t good for tasting, just like this cheap motel isn’t good for staying. But well, I might as well stay here to save some money.

I went to the reception and pressed the bell to be served. A lady, with an edelweiss headband, came with a smiley greeting. ‘Oh Edelweiss, Edelweiss, you look happy to greet me.’ I thought.

‘Good morning, sir. How can I help you today?’ She said with a friendly smile, with a French-ish accent. ‘I would like to check in please, a stay of… about two weeks? I am not exactly sure when I would go home but, Edelweiss shall bless my homeland forever so I am not too fussed about going back.’ I replied. ‘No problem, lately there are not many Tennent’s staying here so you are welcome to extend your booking anytime.’ She said in a happy tone. ‘Yep, thanks. We don’t really say ‘Tennent’s’ or tenants in this context but we call them residents I think. Thank you very much indeed. I am John Smith, and you are….’ I said with the greatest politeness. ‘My name is Stella, Stella Artois. Nice to meet you. You can teach me some English during your stay, and I can take you around the town of Kronenbourg, if you do not have much to do? There is nothing much in the motel that I do so…. Deal?’ She said with a giggle. ‘Yep sure indeed, it would be my pleasure and it sounds brilliant indeed!’ I replied. ‘Oui, since you are the first tennent, oh, no, resident in a month, here is a blue ribbon for you as a souvenir. And now I will show you your room.’ She then took me to show me my room.

It was pretty much a mini motel, and it didn’t even have a garden. I really wondered why it would be named Hoegaarden. But well, at least my room was tidy, with a bed, a writing table, and a little bathroom. Good! As she was going to leave, she asked me if I was free the next morning and she could show me the little park in the town as she would take her dog for a walk. Oh well, Edelweiss would really greet me in the morning!

Next morning at around eight o’clock, I was in the middle between dreaming and waking up, and I heard someone knocking the door. ‘Hey, good morning, Sir. This is Stella, you ready to go?’

‘Oh, Stella is so eager to show me around the town! Oh well, I am charming and suave, that is why!’ I thought with my ultimate confidence.

I went and opened the door, and saw Stella, still with an Edelweiss headband, holding her little dog, which looked like a Yorkshire Terrier to my knowledge.

‘Good morning Stella! How are you? Is this your dog?’ I asked ‘Oui, this is my dog, and his name is Brewdog because he brews a lot every day!’ She replied, with an interesting answer. ‘Oh Brewdog? Do you mean he pees a lot every day?’ I asked. ‘Ehm, yes I think I kind of mean that haha, are you ready for a walkie?’ She asked, with a gently smile. ‘Yes, I am ready whenever you are!’ I answered happily.

It was a nice, sunny day in the town of Kronenbourg. We walked a long a long, straight path for around an hour and a half, and finally we arrived at a park. During the walk, I got to know more about her background: So the motel was a family business of hers. Her parents passed away from an accident when she was twelve. She was then looked after by her uncle, Jack Daniel, who looked after the motel business until she went back and took care of the motel again when she turned twenty.

Back to the park where we went to with the little Brewdog. It was filled with greenery and there was a little lake in the middle.

‘Such a nice park, on a nice day, merci beaucoup my tour guide!’ I exclaimed. ‘You are welcome, sir! This park is called ‘Kingfisher Park’!’ She said. ‘Oh, that is a special name. Let me guess, there must be a very famous fisherman here?’ I asked. ‘You are right, sir. It was a bit of a legend, and I am not sure if it is entirely a true story. But around a century ago, there was a fisherman called Johnny Walker coming to this lake to fish. Since this is a small lake and no one has seen any fish in it, everyone thought it was a joke that he could fish anything. However, he somehow managed to fish a big salmon from it. And so, he was then crowned the Kingfisher, which gave the name of this park.’ She explained.

If listening to stories is all about focus, my focus was all over her angelic face, her melodic speech, and vivid gestures.

Well, it was a walkie for Brewdog, and we did need to keep him entertained. Stella picked a tree stick from the floor, and threw it.

Heineken!’ She shouted as she threw the stick away. ‘Heineken?’ I asked, with a question mark in my head. ‘Yes, Heineken indeed. This is like a little slogan. I used to say ‘High, lick it!’ as I threw the stick and Brewdog would run as fast as possible and get the stick. And sometimes I spoke it fast, it sounded like Heineken, and now I just say it.’ She answered.

This is the strangest, yet the most interesting girl I have seen.

We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun. A few hours flew away quickly. Brewdog, after a few hours of chasing and playing with the stick, was tired. It was time to get home, walking along the long path again.

‘So you like the park, and obviously flowers?’ I asked, as we were walking. ‘Yes, no doubt. As you can see my Edelweiss headband.’ She replied. ‘That is nice, why Edelweiss though? Does it have any special meaning to you?’ I asked again. ‘Ehm, yes. Every time I see Edelweiss, I seem to hear the sound of music from the nature. For the Edelweiss I had on my head, I grew them since they were buds. They were even more beautiful when they were buds, and I called them Budweiser.’ She said, with a lovely smile, just like a blooming Edelweiss.

‘Arrrggghhh!’ Stella screamed suddenly, as we were walking, and pointed her finger forward.

There was a Cobra in the middle of the path, a big one indeed. I was scared. Never had I so keenly aware of the ability of my palm to manufacture sweat. But… with a terrified girl next to me, there was nothing I couldn’t do, because I was a knight, a chivalric one!

With the eye of Tiger, I held Stella’s hand, and lifted Brewdog with my other hand, and quickly ran to the Cobra, as if I was the Guinness record holder of the fastest sprinter in the world. The Cobra was flicking its tongue as I approached it.

‘Do not attempt to lick us, you cannot do Heineken, you are nae Brewdog!’ I shouted, as I kicked the Cobra when I approached it. I knocked the Cobra out!

‘Thank you very much, Sir! You are so brave!’ She exclaimed. ‘Well, you know, I am nae afraid of anything, and it was just easy peasy.’ I said. ‘Yep, you are such a Carling man!’ She said, and gave me a kiss on the forehead. ‘Ehm… You meant caring, don’t you? But thanks!’ I said, and my heart was pumping fast.

Never had I felt so alive! Who cares if she meant Carling or caring? Are there any more beautiful words than Carling or caring? Well, my palm was still sweating, but, she didn’t let go of my hand. So I was determined to hold that girl’s hand for every single second until we were back to Hoegaarden.

So we were back at Hoegaarden, and it was already afternoon. I was tired, but it had been a really nice day.

‘Thank you for keeping me company for the day, and saving me from the Cobra.’ She said to me. ‘You are welcome, and you are such a good tour guide, explaining the history and things in the park today.’ I said. ‘It is no problem at all! Ehm… Are you free tomorrow evening?’ She popped a question, unexpectedly. ‘Ehm… Ye… Yes, I am fr…ee tomorrow evening.’ I answered, oh, my heart started pumping fast again. ‘Would you like to have dinner with me? I know there is a good Chinese restaurant nearby, it is called Tsingdao. I only go there once in a Blue Moon, but it is really nice. I will meet you tomorrow at six in the evening then!’ She explained, she seemed so keen. ‘Yes, that would be… so… so nice! Good, see you tomorrow then!’ I said happily. She then waved me goodbye, as I went back to my room, and wrote, as I had the mood to do so.

‘Okay, what was going on here? What is the feeling at the pit of my stomach? Who is this gorgeous Edelweiss lady in this motel? I have never been nervous speaking to girls, never feeling tongue-tied. I am… confused.’ I thought. ‘What time is it now? Only five? Still more than 24 hours to go until the dinner date?’ Time really couldn’t go faster!

The next day, I could not be bothered doing anything because I was so excited and nervous about the dinner date. Is there anything worse than sitting there waiting for your first date with your heart pumping super-fast? I would rather have my nails peeled off one by one with pliers than sitting in my room, sweating and being nervous.

At exactly six o’clock, she finally knocked my door. It was the most harmonic knocking sound I have ever heard.

‘Are you ready to go?’ She asked, as I opened the door for her. ‘Oui, let’s go!’ I said, with my heart being like a hammer, rattling within my ribcage. Then, we were on our way to Tsingdao.

I did not know where the restaurant was, but she said it was in a place called ‘Coors Light district’, which was not too far away from Hoegaarden. We walked there, and along the way, we talked about what we did during the day time. So her day was much more productive than mine. She took Brewdog to a farm for a walk, and then came back to Hoegaarden to work. Well, I could not really tell her I had been waiting for the dinner the whole day, could I? I simply told her that I took a rest today, and quickly changed the topic to the restaurant we were going to.

Not long after, we arrived at the restaurant. We were both hungry, and I looked at the menu outside, it wrote ‘Famous Grouse buy one get one free’. I was unsure about this dish, but it sounded appealing.

‘Have you had the Famous Grouse here?’ I asked. ‘Yes, it is basically a roasted grouse. We can have it, it is quite a good deal!’ She answered. Yep, it sounded like a fair deal, and so we ordered two Famous Grouse.

It was the first time I went to a Chinese restaurant. It was quite busy, but the atmosphere was quite warm. We were at the seats next to the window. As it was dinner time, there was a lighted candle in the middle of the table. How romantic was that?!

After we sat down, she started speaking about her life in the town. I was trying to concentrate on what she was saying, but I couldn’t. My focus was all on how beauteous she was. Her beautiful blue eyes shone like diamonds, or the blue in the summer skies.

When she caught my gaze, I felt lost in the magic maze.

It was not until the food arrived, that I regained my attention that I was actually in a restaurant. The food was delicious, but it had nothing to compare to my adore for her Edelweiss headband, blond ponytail, cherry sweet lips, the way she smacked her lips before she talked, the way she laughed……

I wanted to freeze time; I wanted to savour every moment during the dinner. The more I looked at her, the more I understood Keats’ words saying ‘A thing of beauty is a joy forever’. Her face became the eternal sunshine of my spotless mind.

Time went past, and we finished our meal, and of course, I paid for the meal, just trying to be a gentleman.

‘It is gin o’clock! Do you want to go back to Hoegaarden for a drink? She asked, as we left the restaurant. ‘Yes sure, that would sound good. What do you want to drink?’ I asked. ‘I said it is gin o’clock. My uncle Gordon sells gin to make a living, and he gave me a bottle of his gin last Christmas. I have not opened it yet, but I think it would be a good drink for tonight.’ She answered. ‘Yes, that sounds good as well, let’s have gin!’ I said, feeling quite excited as she seemed to enjoy the dinner date.

We went back to Hoegaarden. The familiar place being so unfamiliar, since the original place for holiday became the venue of a date, and it felt a bit like a place for me to be interviewed. We went to the reception, and Stella asked me to go behind the till with her. ‘What is she doing?’ I thought.

Behind the till, there was a trap door.

She opened the trap door, and then asked me to follow her to get down.

She climbed down first, then I followed her. It was like the fifth step, that we saw some light. I looked down, and there was actually a hidden compartment , and it felt like another world.

We reached the lower-ground floor, it was like another lounge, but this one it was like a greenhouse, with a field of flowers, and a table with chairs at the corner. I was shocked, how can there be a hidden compartment in the motel? It was such a beautiful place too, with the flowers blooming. ‘I see trees of green, red roses too, I see them bloom, for me and you.’ The lyrics ran through my head.

‘You did not expect this place, did you?’ She asked, with a giggle. ‘Oh yes, never expect there would be such a beautiful, hidden compartment here, with flowers too!’ I exclaimed. ‘Yes, the architect of this complex building is an enthusiast of nature, which is why he had to have a hidden compartment of flowers here. The idea is that people who work in this motel can enjoy the nature here when they are taking breaks. This is where I grew my Edelweiss too!’ She said, happily. ‘So this is the most important bit of Hoegaarden? Because this carries the architect’s mind?’ I asked. ‘Yes, the whole garden, is Hoegaarden. When we got the hotel, the designer told us that the part where normal people see without getting down the trap door is just the tip of iceberg. The architect is called Carl, and so we call the upper bit Carlsberg; while this bit is the centre of Hoegaarden.’ She said.

We then went to the table there, and she took out the bottle of gin from her uncle Gordon, which reads Gordon’s Gin. We started drinking. I was, ehmm, as nervous as a mouse in a cat house, because I felt like I had to make good impressions so that she would maybe like me.

‘How do you like Kronenbourg?’ She asked. ‘I em…. Think it is quite nice here, loving this place! This motel is good too!’ I answered, being a bit tongue-tied. ‘Yes, this is not a big city, but this is what I like, being quiet, and just … nice, a comfortable place to live in.’ She replied to me. ‘Same here, I prefer a place where I feel comfortable to live in, rather than a place where people are too materialistic. Sometimes, it is good to pause for a moment. Beauty is wrapped and hidden between every second of life, and if you don’t stop for a moment, you may miss it. This is why I like it here.’ I could not believe I came up with this suggestive answer. I was looking at her beautiful eyes when constructing my utterance, and the words just came naturally.

She seemed to have noticed the fact that I was staring at her as I was saying. Her pale face was slightly changing to pink, like rose. She looked like she was going to say something, but she did not say a word eventually. There was an awkward silence.

I was thinking about what to say. It was a moment where I needed to say something. I made such an entrance with my utterance and I had to back it up with something. Well, no, I was…I had to go back to Aberdeen to work anyway, maybe I should not tell her anything and start a joke? No! This is just an excuse for a coward not to admit the fact that he likes a woman. Love is about grand gestures; love is about going extra miles even if it may hurt; love is about discovering the courage inside you that you did not even know that existed!

With this mindset in my head, I finally asked ‘Can I extend my stay here?’, having the courage to catch her gaze when speaking. ‘Yes, the Carling man. Till when?’ She said, with a cheeky smile, as if she knew the idea behind my question. ‘That is caring, the Edelweiss lady. And the answer would be till…. whenever.’

P.S. Sequel coming up if there is traffic.

Having been in UK, I concerned too much about immigrating here. I know clearly that, I don’t wanna go back to Hong Kong for work. But what I did miss, was that, there were more European countries that are available to me, that I probably love, that are probably better than UK for me. To be honest, I do like Scotland.

UK immigration is being more and more difficult. It was quite a worry to me, leading me to (maybe) think about doing courses that I totally don’t suit (Yes I thought about doing something related to oil in postgraduate so I can almost guarantee a job that will give me a working visa to stay). All my plan is to study and work, so I can legally stay here for 10 years, then apply for Indefinite Leave Remain, and then a citizenship.

My plan will probably still work, as the new rule of working visa doesn’t affect me, although I think it is entirely a BULLCRAP. So the new rule is, if you want to apply for settlement in UK through working visa, you have to earn £35,000 when you apply for it. While UK ‘seems’ to be blaming for EU immigrants, it is continuing to build the barriers for Non-EU people who want to settle down in UK. This allows me to see what the government really is. There are many people who stay here with working visa will be forced to leave the country if they don’t earn that much. Some of those people are married. To them, it will be a painful divorce. Is that what you want, No. 10? A trial separation, or painful divorce? I know you don’t want unskilled workers to come to the country, but isn’t £35,000 a bit too high? The average salary in UK is way lower than that. Oh yea, also, Non-EU immigrants account for all the immigrants in the country. It makes sense. And yea, you train people and kick them away, as if you cooked a meal, and you throw the food away, make sense.

If I have one piece of advice for people who want to study in UK, that will be “Don’t, if you are not the next Einstein.” You come here to study, you pay a huge tuition fee, and you will NOT be welcome to stay in the country after you graduate if your IQ doesn’t score 200. Well, I’d say Scotland’s approach to students has been nice and friendly, so I quite like Scotland. It’s just that the people in power…. that grosses me out.

Perhaps, studying in UK is a mistake, but I wouldn’t have known that. I’d rather have gone to other European countries for university, even though language could be a communication barrier. But at least, I will feel welcome there. Now, even if I qualify to settle down here, I’m not sure if I will. Thanks for the people in power for encouraging me to learn a new language, and to know what I really want to do. Cheers mates!

I have a dream

To a pal of mine who kept saying to me ‘At the end, you will go back to Hong Kong to live and work, as you will never get a good job here in Europe even if you can stay here. Then you will definitely have to, willing or not, go back.’ I just want to tell this ‘pal’ of mine (who came to Aberdeen with me from Hong Kong), that I am sorry for his pessimistic view of the world. Living in Europe has been my dream for long. I know a fact that, staying in UK to work and to get a citizenship is never easy and I HAVE ALREADY KNOWN THAT, I do NOT need him to keep mentioning it to me that I got almost NO chance. I know this, so I started learning Swedish, because I found that it will be way easier to get a citizenship through Sweden. I will probably keep up my French again soon, because I could also do it through Belgium. Why do I do all that? Because I have a dream, that I would like to fulfil. To that friend of mine, I just want to tell you that, although in your eyes, every place is the same and it is just money that matters, I wholly, truthfully, sincerely, disagree with you. Yes, money matters. Money equals time, time can heal all wounds, so money may be able to cure all wounds. But, have you every thought about dreams, and happiness? A very rich person, can be so poor, that all his got is money. I am not saying that I don’t care about earning money, what I mean is, fulfilling my dreams would give me a sense of achievement, which ultimately gives me a life that I want.

Dreams are very crucial in one’s life, because without dreams, life is miserable. One can be both realistic and have dreams right? If you are an extreme realist who have no dreams, you can probably go ‘fund’ (as a substitute of a rude word) yourself on the day that you were born, as you know everyone is gonna die at the end and nothing last. I probably shouldn’t play table-tennis then because I’ll never be better than some people.

Practically, since the UK Border tends to hate International Students (as they even tried to limited their chance to work here right after graduating), my immigration plan has been changed and is no longer only limited to UK (sensible change as I like Sweden too, was just illuded since I came here long enough). After doing my Undergraduate degree, I’ll do a post-graduate degree here, and I aim at ‘International Law’ or ‘Real Estate’ to increase my competitiveness. To be fair, I thought I would like English and Linguistics, so I didn’t count my choice of subjects to be a mistake. Also, in the forth year, I’ll properly learn Swedish from University. After graduating, I’ll apply for jobs in Sweden that can give me work visa and work for 5 years. Job Done. Another route, if I am not satisfied with the job, I can ALWAYS do a course in Belgium (European Studies in KU Leuven) as it does not cost much, and keep going. As long as I stay in ANY EU countries (apart from UK) for 5 or more years I am entitled a EU passport. Am I not realistic? I checked everything I can do for my dream! And I will go fund myself for those plans!

So, my friend, do NOT think it is impossible for me. When there is a will, there is a way. The path may be tough, but I will get through it and be so happy that you will never be.

Prologue: Stockholm Trip

Sweden, in my mind, has always been a beautiful place, since I saw the Youtube Video of the 2008 Sweden’s Got Talent winner, Zara Larsson, singing the best version of ‘My Heart Will Go On’. Her singing, for some bizarre reasons, gave me the idea that Sweden is like a paradise.

Finally, after several years of waiting, I finally got the chance to visit Sweden. Why Sweden? First, I found that it is a more immigration-friendly country, so I think it could be quite a nice place to stay if I want to stay in Europe. The UK immigration is probably too difficult although it is still my plan A. Anyway, therefore, I started learning Swedish (Although I am still super limited in terms of the Swedish Knowledge). This trip will allow me to see whether I like Sweden or not. I am looking forward to it anyway.

Thinking about trip to Shetland, seeing the nature (Pony) is one of the biggest aims for me and my pal. It was kind of disappointing. Because we tried to search for ponies for a few days (provided that we stayed there only for 4 days), and we saw 2! T-W-O! We indeed saw SO MANY SHETLAND PONIES! Where are they all? Did they get their visa to stay somewhere else? Nightlife was the other reason why we visited Shetland. It was one of the biggest mistake as the whole Shetland was so quiet for nightlife and there were only like 4 or 5 pubs. Do they have Garage and stuff? Yes if you take Garage literally but not if you mean a nightclub. I don’t mean I don’t like Shetland, I still probably want to move there when I get older, it is just that we went there for the wrong reasons.

I am kind of eager to see the nightlife in Sweden. I hope it will be nice, as I saw from the pictures and videos online. Expensive drinks in bar can not be avoided but we can just do pre-drinks to reduce the cost of getting high. I shall wear suit too, as I probably look like George Clooney when I do and it will be AWESOME!

What happens in Sweden, Stays in Sweden. Well, or not?

My family is a poor one, where cash is the only thing left. Dad is always busy counting cash, while mum is always busy collecting the cash. We don’t even have bedding sheets, so we cover ourselves with bank notes.

We don’t even have toilet rolls, so we use bank notes to wipe my butt. In order to see from the dark, we burn the bank notes to get the light for reading and stuff like that, therefore my eyes are poor.

The location of my house is no good as well. Every of my friend lives somewhere near supermarket, while the nearest Tesco to my house is like 3 hours of driving away, you get to go with Ferrari as well, if you go with Benz, it takes you 4 hours probably.

Since my house is too big, I sometimes pee myself at the night time because it is too far from my bedroom to the toilet. So I got a motor bike so I could get to the loo on time.

Everytime I think about my horrible past, I feel bad about it.

Since the ‘yes’ votes lost, I have been thinking about whether my immigration plan would still work. I just can’t be so positive for it. I just don’t think there is a high chance that the plan that my family and I worked out would work. I thank them for their massive support, as I am the first priority for the immigration plan, as they know that I love Europe, and going back to Hong Kong would be like putting a salmon back onto the beach (i.e. it would suffer). We aim at 3 types of visa which would allow me to stay in the UK for 10 years, then I could get into the citizenship:

Tier 1 (Entrepreneur):
This plan requires you to invest £200,000 to run a business, and the business has to work for 3 years before you can extend the visa to more years. This is still the main part of the plan, however, I would quite feel sorry for my parents. It is their money, they earned it with a lot of work and sweat. ALTHOUGH they want to use it to give a chance for all of us to move here, I am not sure if it is a good idea to risk that amount of money. Besides, after the general election next year, there is a chance that they are restricting the rule too, so I am not sure if we can even afford it.

Tier 2 (General)
This is the plan that I aimed at, but I am super UNCONFIDENT about it. I need to get a job with annual salary more that £24,000, and the company who hired me has to show that there is NO other EU candidates who can fill in this role (I think the immigration rule is a bit of a racist) I just don’t see how I can get it….

Tier 4 (Student)
Being a student for 10 years? Aye, the ideal case, IF the 8-year-cap (limit that you can’t stay in university for mroe than 8 years on student visa) This is not gonna work in my opinion…

My mum joked about marrying a British girl would allow me to stay here. Aye, it is true, but it is hard. If any of the reader of this post is inetested, give me a shout and we will see if we have chemistry. (Lol!)

As I have mentioned in one of my previos posts, I love Scotland. I can’t imagine what it woudl be like if I am forced to leave: remember every previous memory here: the scene that I first came here, the friends I got here, the silly jokes I share with my friends here, and how I started table-tennis here, going nightouts…………… I think I would burst into tears if I am forced to leave those memories.

If I cannot get to stay here, I would go to Sweden (probably one of the easies EU countries to immigrate, with many people speaking English too), get a EU passport, then (if UKIP does not succeed), then I would still be able to come back to this amazing land as a EU Citizen and stay for long.

Scotland, is my first love (in terms of countries). I am sure there are other good countries I would like out there, like Belgium, and Germany. But my first love, is always gonna be Scotland, and so, it will need to be my home.

After the disappointment from the Scotland Independence Referendum, there has been something going on in my hometown Hong Kong, there is a big ‘peaceful protest’ for democracy going on. Well, I don’t know much about the context so I think it would be irresponsible for me to comment on the protest. However, what comes into my mind is that, this is not really a good way for gaining democracy. The ACT of protest, in my opinion, is alright. The PEACEFUL protest (not hurting anyone) is even a cute idea, although I doubt its effectiveness. People just accumulate in the busiest areas (mainly Central, Admiralty, and Mong Kok) 24 hours 7 days sitting there protesting. I know why they proposed the idea of a PEACEFUL protest, the reason is that the government would not have any excuse to clear them up using military force, but does it really mean they would achieve their goals eventually? I doubt it. Also, this is pretty harmful to the economy in Hong Kong, with quite a lot of people not to work for a couple of days in the most economically-important areas, so I would say it could end up in a lose-lose consequence. Also, many university students do not go to university to support the protest, and they claim that they would not go schools but they would still be doing self-study. So it’s like, people not going to work, but still doing freelance? I mean, if you are really into the protest, you should put 100% effort in it, without worrying the things that you need to do to compensate for it.

I believe this is not the best way to gain democracy, as it could lead to a lose-lose consequence. I agree that Hong Kong should gain more democracy, but I just don’t think this is the best way to do it.

In my opinion, no matter what the outcome of the protest would be, Hong Kong would be quite chaotic in the next few years, there must be a big change (no matter whether it is good or bad). This strengthen my will of not going back to Hong Kong for a living, right, it is a NO THANKS. For this, I must do my degree well, to prolong my stay in the UK (hopefully more than 10 years legally), then I can get a British Passport. Ireland, Switzerland Sweden, France, Germany, and Austria are all my other choices, because the immigration policies to those countries are relatively easy,. New Zealand and Canada are the next ones. If NONE of them work, probably it means I have no choice, then I will go back to Hong Kong to work, while I would keep on applying jobs in the UK which would give me the Working Visa. All roads lead to Rome, I believe that UK would eventually vote YES to Hayes Chan!

Too much revolution is going on lately, first came the Scotland Independence Referendum, then it was the Romanticism course which is very much related to the French Revolution, and here came the Hong Kong Revolution…. I may, as well, go to the Revolution Bar to get a few drinks, to get myself a revolution, anyone joining?

So yesterday was a crucial date for Scotland, it determined whether it would become an independent country.

For myself, I don’t have the right to vote (as I haven’t been here long enough), I may not have the right to support any side either (I have only be here for 2 years). I would say, it is destiny that made me come to Scotland, I chose Aberdeen University only because it’s the first university that appeared on the UCAS list (due to its alphabetical order), with no practical reason. Having been here for a few months, I found this place lovely, and unique. Scottish people are friendly, they have great landscape, Aberdeen has its own marvellous granite as it is called the granite city, Loch Ness has its own mystery for the Loch Ness Monster, Shetland has its own Shetland ponies, Highland has its own Scottish Whiskey….. Scotland is just a land with a lot of unique features, and I love it profoundly!

I am in favor of YES Campaign for Scotland Independence Referendum firstly because I guess it would be easier for me to immigrate to this amazing land if Scotland becomes independent. Yes, I was selfish and I only thought about myself. That’s why I joined the YES Campaign on their FB Group. Having been there for a while, I very much appreciate the efforts that they have put in, in order to achieve their goal. They may have different background, but they only have one aim: Scotland Independence. From what I saw, they genuinely have their reasonable arguments FOR Scotland Independence, and they indeed tried 110% of what they could have done to get as many YES votes as possible. I am actually touched by their efforts, and their passion about Scotland, and so I started persuading my friends to vote YES. I don’t have the right to vote, however, I successfully got 2 of my friends changing from NO to YES, and 3 friends from not voting to voting YES, so hopefully they kind of voted on my behalf.

We lost. However, I would think it as a glorious defeat, as I believe most of the YES voters have got their logical reasons in mind, and they truly believe in Independence; while some of the NO voters were probably just ignorant, refusing to here what the YES was about. I respect the finaly results, I respect the NO voters who actually have their reasons. I don’t know, but I found that YES voters, regardless of their defeat, are more respectable for their attempt for innovation, and revolution, while the NO votes would probably refer to being defensive and safe. I think the world somehow needs some innovation and revolution to improve, so if I could vote, it would definitely have been the biggest YES. I am disappointed, for sure, I thought Scottish people are the ones who sing the songs of Freedom, Scotland the Brave, but when they got the chance of having their freedom, they just chose not to have it.

Thinking about my future, with Scotland being back to UK again, the immigration policy would be pretty hard. I can still do it, as long as I can get a decent job, or open a business here. However, I shall find another way as well, as I don’t want to go back to HK or China anymore. I love Europe. So I may immigrate to Ireland, or France I assume (if I cannot immigrate to Scotland/ UK), so it may be time for me to pick up French again. Once I have got the EU passport, then I can always easily come back to Scotland to live, it may just take a longer time!
